Who is responsible for a levee
Most levees are not maintained by the federal government. The sponsor named on each record is usually the body to contact.
The record for each system names a sponsor, which is the local body responsible for operating and maintaining it. That is commonly a levee district, a drainage district, a city or a county. Federal involvement varies: some systems were built by USACE and are maintained locally, some are inspected under a federal programme, and many have no federal role at all.
The fields that tell you
- Responsible sponsor names the maintaining body.
- USACE oversight indicates the system sits within a Corps programme.
- Federally built indicates federal construction, which does not imply federal maintenance.
- USACE district and division locate the system within the Corps structure, which is useful when the sponsor field is empty.
If you need to raise a maintenance concern, the sponsor is the first contact and the USACE district is the second.
